He is described as "shrewd and cunning" but does not seem to have been particularly well-liked. He wanted to pay off the debt for the liveship in his lifetime, and so sailed always overloaded and was harsh with his crew.
Uto had one known son, Kerr, who served as ship's boy. Uto is said to have been very hard on him. Father and son died together when the ship was wrecked during a storm, and provided the final two lives for him to quicken.
