Begasti Cored is a rich merchant Chalcedean trading partner of Hest Finbok. Like many top traders in Chalced, his family is secretly being held hostage by the Duke of Chalced in order to motivate Begasti into finding him dragon parts to consume as medicine. He is working under the oversight of Lord Dargen with Sinad Arich to infiltrate the Rain Wilds to get access to the dragons there.

After Hest punishes Sedric by forcing him to accompany Alise to the Rain Wilds to observe the dragons there, Sedric meets with Begasti in secret to make an arrangement to procure blood, flesh, and scales in return for an enormous sum of money.
City of Dragons[]
After hearing nothing from Sedric, and under pressure by Lord Dargen, Begasti travels to the Cassarick to check on Sinad Arich and the efforts to procure dragon parts. Sinad has been hiding out in a brothel, and one dark and rainy night he comes upon a lost Malta in labor. He kidnaps her, hides her in the brothel, and sends for Begasti. He tells Begasti they can slaughter the Elderling and her baby and pass their scaled skin off as dragon parts to save their families from the Duke's wrath. Begasti sends Sinad out to get supplies to preserve and transport their flesh, and then turns on Malta. She manages to grab a knife and stab him in the throat, killing him and saving herself and her newborn.
